This is the prime time of year for Dovekie but to see numbers of them we must get far enough offshore to reach the water temperatures where they feed. Razorbill and Common Murre are regular, Atlantic Puffin fairly regular, andsometimes we’ve found Thick-billed Murre on these trips. Rarities seen at this time of year have included Great Skua, Black Guillemot, and the only verified record of Western Gull east of the Mississippi.

The trip runs differently than in the summer. We chum as we move to attract Gannets, Fulmars, and gulls including Black-legged Kittiwake, Lesser Black-backed, Iceland, and sometimes Glaucous.  Fin and Humpbacked Whales are always possible, Common Dolphins are regular, and we even sometimes see Atlantic White-sided Dolphins or Harbor Porpoise. Time is built in to reach the commercial fishing boats if any are in the area.

Sunday, January 5, 2020 Pt. Pleasant Beach, NJ 9 Hour Pelagic              This trip is being run in conjunction with New Jersey Audubon’s Youth Birding Program.  The first 10 spaces are reserved for the NJAS Youth and their parents.  Any youth birders interested in joining this trip are welcome.

This shorter trip provides a great introduction to winter pelagic birding in our area. Although there are some species which are less likely than on our longer trips we still find many species regularly including Common Murre, Razorbill, Black-legged Kittiwake, some of the rarer gulls, and other seabirds like scoters, loons, and cormorants. Though not regular we have found Dovekie, Atlantic Puffin, Thick-billed Murre, and Northern Fulmar on several trips each. Humpback and Fin Whales are also possible along with Common Dolphin, not to be confused with the Bottlenose Dolphin you see when the weather is warmer.

We chum as we travel to attract gulls, Gannets, and hopefully other birds. The pace and the fact that birds fly right up to the boat provides plenty of views of species and plumages and often provide fantastic photographic opportunities.

PAST TRIPS 2019

Rescheduled Lewes, DE Trip: September 28-29, 2019

Boat: One of the Thelmas or whatever big boat HD wants to drive that day! (At least 100 ft.)

Depart/Return: 10:00 PM – 4:00 PM

The August 24-25 trip did not sail, and has been rescheduled. People that already were signed up must confirm they are going and will have their same spots or better. Email info@paulagics.com to confirm your spot!

Lewes holds a sentimental spot in our hearts as the port where we ran our first trip from in 2002. We have made some great discoveries together over the years but the interest in the overnight trips has been waning for some time. We’re going to give this one last chance but expect that this will be the end of summer overnight trips out of this port for us.  Hopefully, we can get enough for a last go. – UPDATE – the trip sold out and had a waitlist of 7 people! So, we will do it again in 2020!!  Keep up the momentum and let’s continue this journey of discovery on the open seas together for years to come. 10/1/19 -PAG

Brooklyn NY: September 21-22, 2019

Boat: Brooklyn VI (100 ft.)
Depart/Return: 9:00 PM Sat – approx:7:00 PM Sun
Dock directions/details

Cost: $250

This is now a 22 hour trip!

Our weekend forecast is now after the Hurricane and we may be lucky enough to pick up a few “hurricane birds”.  The forecast is currently at departure 3 ft seas and dropping.  Due to the great weather forecasted we are willing to add a few more last minute spaces since the forecast looks like it’s going to be nice.  And it is so nice Anita is planning to join us.  We all know she has very good luck and can be called “Domino” based on the character from Deadpool 2. If she’s going, you better believe it’s going to be a nice ride.

This time of year should still provide the same species we see in the summer as we’ve had Black-capped Petrel as late as October and there are multiple records of White-faced Storm-Petrel for September. The time of year gives us an increased chance for all 3 species of jaeger, terns, potentially greater numbers of Leach’s Storm-Petrel, and it could even be a good time of year to pick up a Sabine’s Gull.

Pt. Pleasant, NJ: Sat, Aug 17 – Sun, Aug 18, 2019

Trip SOLDOUT!  Sailed Successfully! 3 White-faced Storm Petrels! Whoo Hoo!

Boat: Voyager (100 ft.)

Depart/Return: 8:30 AM Sat – approx 5:00 PM Sun

Cost: $335

The BIG Trip!

As we announced earlier this year we have found a boat that is properly set up to allow us to run a 32-hour trip in reasonable comfort. The boat has bunks, a galley, spacious aisles along the rail below, and a great upper deck. The captain and crew are highly experienced in handling long overnight trips and run overnight fishing trips on a regular basis.

The length of this trip allows us to maximize our time in deep water and explore multiple areas. We will explore on our way out, set up a chum slick which we can bird until dark, have our slick set back up pre-dawn, and bird until it’s time to come home. The amount of time this trip gives us our best chance of finding something rare and provide more chances to observe those species that are more regular.

STATE LISTING NOTE: To those interested in state listing we are NOT specifically targeting NY or NJ. We plan to visit the best water conditions along a stretch of the Continental Shelf close to 150 miles in length.

Cape May, NJ: Sun, Aug 11 – Mon, Aug 12, 2019

SOLD OUT!   SAILED SUCCESSFULLY – MEGA EPIC TRIP! 13 White-faced Storm Petrels! Whoo Hoo!

Boat: Atlantic Star (100 ft.)

Cape May Charter

The Buffalo Ornithological Society has reserved about 40% of the spaces for a Cape May trip. The rest is open for general signups. We will follow our normal overnight itinerary that has produced good sightings and set multiple records over the years. With the number of spaces already reserved, we suggest signing up early to ensure getting the best sleeping spaces remaining.

Brooklyn, NY: Sun, July 21 – Mon, July 22, 2019 SAILED SUCCESSFULLY!

SOLD OUT!

Boat: Brooklyn VI (100 ft.)

Depart/Return: 9:00 PM – approx 7:00 PM

Cost: $250

We have decided to try a slightly different time of year in hopes of perhaps improving our chances at finding some of the rarer warm water species. We’ll be running our usual 22 hours to ensure we can get into and spend time in the deep waters that attract them. Now that we’ve found Fea’s and Trindade Petrels for NY it’s time to find something really rare!
